Raleigh homeowner handcuffed, detained after home security false alarm

JOEL? >>Reporter: TISHA, HE HAS LIVED IN THIS HOME IN NORTH RALEIGH FOR THE PAST FIVE YEARS. IT IS NOT THE FIRST TIME HIS HOME SECURITY SYSTEM HAS BEEN TRIPPED BY MISTAKE. TYPICALLY HE SAYS IF THE POLICE SHOW UP, YOU SHOW YOUR I.D., YOU PROVE YOU’RE THE HOMEOWNER, THERE MAY BE A FINE TO PAY, BUT IT IS OVER THAT DID NOT HAPPEN LAST SATURDAY. HE SAYS HE WAS HUMILIATED INSIDE HIS HOME AND HE SUSPECTS IT WAS BECAUSE OF THE OF HIS SKIN. >>TURN AROUND AND FACE AWAY FROM ME. >>WHAT? >>WHAT? >>TURN AROUND AND FACE AWAY FROM ME NOW. >>Reporter: HE IS IN HIS BOXER SHORTS STARING DOWN THE BARREL OF A RALEIGH POLICE OFFICER’S GUN. >>IT IS ONE OF THE MOST HUMILIATING EXPERIENCES OF MY LIFE. >>Reporter: 12:30:00 P.M. >>MAKE YOURSELF KNOWN! >>Reporter: THE OFFICER ARRIVES TO HIS UNLOCKED FRONT DOOR. >>THE RESIDENTIAL 4-4. >>Reporter: HE IS RESPONDING TO A 4-4. HE SAY AS FRIEND STAYED OVER THAT NIGHT AND TRIPPED THE ALARM UNKNOWINGLY WHEN HE LEFT. HE DISENGAGED IT AND WENT BACK TO SLEEP. >>I LAID BACK DOWN AND ALL I HEARD WAS SOMEBODY SCREAMING DOWN STAIRS. SO I GRABBED MY PHONE BECAUSE I DON’T KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON AND I RUN DOWN THE STEPS. AND IT IS THE COPS. >>COME ON OUT WITH YOUR HANDS UP. >>OKAY. ALL RIGHT. >>COME ON OUT. >>DO YOU HAVE YOUR FIREARMS IN HAND? >>Reporter: HE IMMEDIATELY DROPPED HIS GUN. HE DOES HAVE A CONCEAL-CARRY PERMIT. THE 31-YEAR-OLD MAKES HIS LIVING AS A WELL KNOWN PARTY PROMOTER, BUT ON SATURDAY HE SAYS THE OFFICER REFUSED TO BELIEVE HE LIVED THERE. >>COME ON OUT HERE FOR ME. >>COME ON OUT OF THE HOUSE, PLEASE. >>I GOT ON MY DRAWERS. >>TURN AROUND. TURN AROUND. HANDS BEHIND YOUR BACK. >>PUT YOUR HANDS BEHIND YOUR BACK AND GET DOWN ON YOUR KNEES. >>FOR WHAT? >>WE HAVE A 4-4-1 HERE. I HAVE AN OPEN DOOR. >>I JUST TEXTED THE ALARM PEOPLE. >>I’M CONFUSED. >>DO I HAVE I.D. LET’S IDENTIFY ME AND GET ME OUT OF HERE. I DEFINITELY NEED A SUPERVISOR HERE BECAUSE THIS IS NOT RIGHT. >>WHAT HAVE I DONE WRONG? >>I HAVEN’T DONE NOTHING WRONG. IN HANDCUFFS WEARING JUST HIS UNDERWARE, HE WAS ESCORTED OUTSIDE TO A WAITING POLICE CAR WHILE OFFICERS SEARCHED HIS HOME. >>THERE ARE A LOT OF STORIES LIKE THIS THAT GO UNTOLD. >>THERE IS NO REASON THIS MAN SHOULD HAVE BEEN PULLED OUT OF HIS OWN HOME, NOT ASKED FOR PROPER IDENTIFICATION, AND IT PROGRESSED THIS FAR. >>BEING BLACK CAN DEFINITELY BE ONE OF THE SHIES THAT IS THE PROBLEM. I HOPE IT IS NOT, BUT IF THAT IS WHAT IT IS, IT JUST NEEDS TO BE RESOLVED. >>SO WE REACHED OUT TO RALEIGH POLICE AND THE DEPARTMENT RESPONDED WITH A STATEMENT, AND THE RALEIGH POLICE DEPARTMENT IS LOOKING INTO THIS INCIDENT AND REVIEWING OUR OFFICER’S ACTIONS, WE HAVE ATTEMPTED TO CONTACT THE HOMEOWNER SEVERAL TIMES OVER THE PAST FEW DAYS TO DISCUSS THIS INCIDENT WITH HIM. HE SAYS HE JUST WANTS AN APOLOGY. PITTMA

  1. Wtf. Improper training. The officer total failed. Tell him not to go to wilmington nc lol. They are so predujiced they only pull poor people and black people there. This shit is real and its apauling here in NC.

  2. Cops are kids that were harassed and picked on in school. This is their revenge to society. That "officer" obviously failed his course in deescalation.

  3. this is the problem with alarm systems, this has nothing to do with race. a white man was shot at 9 times when opening the door after the alarm went off and thus dialed 911 through a app. I hate how the media likes to make things about race when this happens all the time to many races. https://youtu.be/6zrCBWdbq5A

  4. And I’m pretty sure if didn’t check out things properly he would be sued…… So it’s damned if you do and damned if you don’t ….so let’s just damn do!!!!

  5. Anecdotal: I am home with my wife and daughter. All of a sudden I hear a forceful knock at my front door as though someone is knocking with some metal pipe. A young policeman is there telling me that someone called 911. I tell him nobody has called. He wants to enter the home. He says that I could be lying and have a hostage in the home.  I call my wife and daughter and asked them if they called 911. Both say no. I notice now a dent on my door. I ask the officer why he damaged my door. He denies that. I tell him he can enter my home, that is if he gets a warrant. He calls the headquarters, four police cars with lights and sirens arrive and the cops  run to my door. I refuse to let them in and tell them they are trespassing. The sergeant comes nose to nose with me. I tell him if he makes another move towards me I will consider that an aggressive move I will have to defend myself. He backs away. I tell this sergeant, you are just posing to show your underlings how to intimidate people. I then ask, am I under arrest? The answer – NO. I tell them to get the hell out of my property, I enter my home. They begin to harass my wife and daughter. I call my lawyer, he comes and then we make an official complain to the Captain of the police department. Two years later the sergeant and two officers are booted from the force.

  6. SUE the officer, county and state! Use SF 95 and file it with the Department of Justice Tort claims division. NO Need 4 court, no attorney, no judge needed. It gets ajudicated administratively – all paperwork. Demand 100s millions because they settle for pennies on the dollar but they WILL settle. The great PRIVATE men & women at moziahcorporation.com can help you get your remedy for this injustice. They will show you how to BANKRUPT that RACIST officer, county and State. No more arguing, just hit them in thier WALLETS!!! Risk Management pays the liabilities of Officer ( public official) who commit Torts agaisnt the Private man while executing the duties of thier office. This is an EASY pay day!!

  7. You have a gun and the police don't know who you are. Why not simply comply with orders and let them get their job done? What if you weren't the homeowner? The police did nothing wrong and you were acting shady. It's not a color thing, it's a behavior and attitude that is alarming to police and puts them on alert.

  8. Remember y'all the media only shows you certain part's of video's as we have seen in the past so let's wait and see the whole thing.

  9. This homeowner should just do what the police ask him to do immediately following the order to drop his gun.

I say this because it's in the homeowner's best interest not to get shot (saying the least).

In this case one should give the police officer the benefit of the doubt that the call from the homeowner to the alarm security agency was not received by the police in time before their entrance inside the house.

It may not be necessary for the police to apologize for doing their job – but I'd encourage them to do so just to appease the homeowner.

And yes, I'm a black man.

  10. This was unfortunate but shit happens. Just cooperate until they can establish you're the owner. Shut the fuck up about racism, these officers see all kinds of crazy shit and can't assume anything. Just cooperate until they can work through the details.

  11. Even security guards know that you need to ask for an ID specially when the alarm was reset..
I will sympathize with the cop if the alarm still sounding coz you may have an active intruder.
Soooo many stupid idiotic cops nowadays

  12. It wasn’t because he is black. It’s because he announced he had a gun. The officer doesn’t know if he could have another firearm. He was not very cooperative or patient in allowing the officer to verify the situation.

  13. I have indoor cameras pointed everywhere in my home for this same exact scenario, an encounter with a racist cop who cant do the job

  14. Yeah, this is messed up. I'm a white, early 30s male teacher. I moved into a friends house back in the day after he moved out of state. He wanted someone watching his home while he was away. His alarm system had a key fob. One day, after I got home in the late evening, I accidentally hit the panic button on the fob. I immediately disarmed it and went to the phone. He told me before that if it went off, they'd call the house phone and I'd have to say a secret word. I waited, no call. A few moments later, a knock at the door. I walk down, and it's two police officers. I open it and explain the situation. They apologize for the interruption and they leave. Didn't ask my name or confirm with the owners (phone call away based on security) nor did they ask to enter the home. I was basically in the early stages of removing my clothes, but it was slacks and an un-tucked button up shirt. I always thought it was odd that they didn't ask for ID, call the home owner, or anything. But I think because I was a decently dressed white man with a good story the didn't challenge me. It's honestly always bothered me. I could have EASILY had the homeowner (my friend in his 50-60s) and his mother (90s, who recently lived there before she was taken to a home) kidnappened and/or disposed of. But they just trusted my story.

I feel for this man because I've seen the opposite side and what I think white privilege got me.

  15. If you make a choice as a minority to live in a conservative racist state, prepare for this type of treatment. I'd rather sell the soul of my mother to the devil than to live anywhere in the South.

  16. This video shows the officer opened the door which is illgal! This officer had no right to enter this house then all officers should be fired license revoked. They each committed a crime.

  17. I hope he sues the hell out of that city department. “Sir, come outside, we need to clear the house” is code for “Hey Black/Brown guy, we need you to go outside for a bit so we have time to plant some evidence that’ll justify this entire ridiculous and made up *search*” smh

  18. This makes me so angry! This homeowner was humiliated by these inept cops! I hope the first officer, especially, gets punished! He had his gun drawn and slapped cuffs on this innocent man before he bothered to ID the homeowner. That’s completely backwards!

  19. Wow, breaking into the house in underwear….. common sense. Ask for a piece of mail with his name and address. Why search his house.

  20. Uh I had the same thing happen. RPD was absolutely the opposite. Polite, professional, showed my id told him false alarm. He thanked me I thanked him. Boom. Done in 5min. Just comply people. Stop and think about situations from the cops point of view. Sometime we are our own problem. 🤦🏾‍♂️
