Purina Better Together finalist: Theo – Cats Protection’s National Cat Awards 2018

My name’s Charlotte Dixon, this is my
husband Stuart and my cat Theo. Theo is eight years old now, soon to be nine, and when I
first got Theo he had cat flu and he was really quite poorly which did affect his
heart, affected his breathing and everything else and he wasn’t expected
to live to be very old at all so it’s a miracle really that he’s got this far. I nursed him back to health by feeding him every hour on the hour with liquidised cat food through a
pipette, which wasn’t the greatest but it ensured that he lived. Three years ago I
was feeling really bad, really poorly, I went to bed and Theo wouldn’t let me
sleep. He just kept pawing at my face and keeping me awake. The following morning I collapsed and we called an ambulance and the paramedic diagnosed a blood clot and
said that if Theo hadn’t kept me awake that night, I wouldn’t have woken up. I
would have died in my sleep. Theo helps us cope, I suppose, because he is
incredibly intuitive, he knows when you’re feeling down. He’s always
there when you get home from work, you know and going through his own stuff
with his heart failure. Despite all that he’s there for us which is incredible.
Life will be incredibly difficult when Theo’s not around. He
has been diagnosed with heart failure and we do know that he’s probably got
about six months. Just knowing that he’s not going to be here always is really
difficult to cope with actually.
