Protection and Advocacy for Assistive Technology (PAAT)

Hello, I’m Mary, I work for Protection and
Advocacy for People with Disabilities (P&A). I want to tell you about a program
we have here at P&A called the Protection and Advocacy for Assistive
Technology Program (PAAT). PAAT is a program that helps people with
disabilities who are denied access to assistive technology devices and/or
services that they need. An assistive technology device is any item or
equipment that helps a person with a disability in daily life. An assistive technology service is any
service that directly helps a person with a disability choose, get, or use an
assistive technology device. Assistive technology can help people
access greater independence at home, in the community, on the job, and at school.
Some examples of assistive technology are videophones, alert systems for example
alarms with flashing lights, clocks doorbell alerts with lights, listening
devices such as hearing aids and FM systems, captioning devices, wheelchairs, speech devices, home
modifications. Assistive technology can include many other things as well. Some
of the various issues that we can help with are teach people about the right to
assistive technology and how to self-advocate for their rights regarding
assistive technology. Refer people to places in the community that can help
pay for assistive technology. Help students who have been denied assistive technology evaluations, devices, or support services. Help workers who need reasonable accommodations involving assistive techonolgy in order to do their job Help people who need assistive technology in order to live independently in their own homes. Help people who need assistive technology repaired or
replaced when it is not working properly This funding does not allow P&A to pay
for assistive technology devices or services for our clients, but we do
advocate that agencies and insurance including Medicaid and Medicare provide
or assist with the purchase of assistive techonology. If you have an issue that you feel fits
under this program you’re free to contact us. There are three different options. You can call P&A at 1- 866-275-7273 If you
