Protected Intersections in Ottawa

[pop music] Protected intersections. Protected intersections improve visibility and safety by separating drivers, cyclists and pedestrians with a physical barrier. The corner safety island separates traffic from cyclists and pedestrians. Cyclists stop here. Drivers stop here. Pedestrians stop here. This added distance gives cyclists and pedestrians a head-start when crossing and makes them much more visible to a turning driver. Cyclists turn left with a two-stage left turn. When turning right, cyclists are completely separated from traffic. For added safety, some intersections will also have advanced green lights for pedestrians and cyclists.
