Mobile Apps with a Wireless Home Alarm System

Mobile Apps with a Wireless Home Alarm System

Hello and welcome to the FrontPoint Podcast
Series. I’m your host Greg Able here today with FrontPoint’s Chief Operating Officer
Peter Rogers. Hi Greg. Hi peter. Thanks for taking the time. Everybody walks around these
days with a Blackberry, an iPhone, we text, we get messages, video on our little hand
held devices and we’re hearing that finally home security is coming to the mobile application
market. Tell me what that means and what you’re seeing. What we’re seeing is people really
are interested in the ability to proactively monitor what’s happening in their home and
to be able to do that by accessing their system from anywhere. Meaning at work, when you’re
traveling, on a PDA, perfect application for second home owners, busy moms and dads, frequent
travelers, anybody who wants to see what’s happening at home and also to be able to control
it. So when you have your PDA, you can check what’s happening at home. A lot of people
just think about the key pad but what you’re saying is that you can receive information
on the go. That’s right you can get information and you can receive it both.
Tell us a little bit about the top applications that are available on local devices. The things
that people are really excited about are the ability to receive notifications by text or
email on conditions happening in the home. Could be a door opening, could be water, could
be temperature you name it, or someone arming and disarming the system. So those notifications
are very very popular. Secondarily people are really excited about the ability to arm
and disarm their system when they’re not home.
Yeah let’s talk about that a little bit. So I assume that’d come in handy if you
had someone like a contractor coming to your house and you don’t want to have to go home
or give them your code, you can arm or disarm from your mobile device? Exactly. Being able
to arm and disarm the system for service providers is great and the third one is video. Very
very popular. So video, it sounds like something where that’s
pretty sophisticated. Do you have to have some sort of high end system to get video
on your cell phone. You actually don’t. All you need is a broadband connection in
your home and you can get cameras that will actually transmit live video clips and allow
you to look into your home at any time. So a lot of people have these phones now like
an iPhone or a Blackberry or even a regular phone that might have a browser. So you’re
saying anything with one of those, as long as you have a camera at home as part of your
system, you can monitor your house. That’s right. As long as you have an internet and
browser enabled hand held device. Very cool. Now what if I bought an alarm system ten years
ago, it’s hard wired and I want to implement some of these modern technologies and mobile
applications. Am I out of luck? I’m afraid you are. Most of these old systems were really
designed and so it usually requires getting a new system. The good news is, a lot of the
next generation companies, like our company FrontPoint, are specifically targeting customers
who want to upgrade their system. Alright well what are some of the key takeaways you
can tell anyone thinking about mobile applications in home security? The single most important
part of it is about being connected, not just being protected. The ability to remotely access
your system and have it tell you things is really key to people. It’s not just about
an alarm system anymore. Got it. Alright great information Peter, really appreciate your
time. Thanks for joining us. We’ll see you next time on the FrontPoint Podcast Series.
