Homemade Security Alarm

Homemade Security Alarm

So recently I visited my grandparents during
a break from school. They were asking all about college life and
how classes were and, both are great by the way. So yeah, my grandpa, he was particularly interested
in the all the engineering projects and things I’ve been working on, so he took the opportunity
to share about this homemade security alarm that he made several years ago. So, it’s actually pretty simple how it works. There’s this sensor unit here that was originally
intended for like an automatic outdoor lighting system. So when it detects movement, it closes a circuit
that originally would have turned on say, a light bulb, but now my grandpa’s rigged
it to turn on this bell alarm. So yeah, it closes the circuit, that turns
on the alarm, and the bell rings. It’s pretty loud when it’s plugged in. Although my grandpa didn’t actually build
this bell unit from scratch, I wanted to walk through how the circuit operates real quick
because I think it’s pretty cool. So when the striking arm is in its resting
position, it is touching this metal contact that closes a circuit that, when power is
fed through these wires, it is able to go through and turn on these two electromagnets
that you see down here. So with the electromagnets on, they attract
the striking arm and boom, it hits the bell, makes a loud noise, awesome. So in the process of moving towards the magnets
and ringing the bell, the striking arm becomes disconnected from the metal contact, which
means the circuit is now open, current can no longer flow through to the magnets, and
then they turn off, then the spring-loaded can return to its original position,
where it touches the contact again and the cycle repeats over and over, really fast,
and it’s really loud. The thing I find so cool about this alarm
system is that it is made from, it reuses old parts in ways they weren’t originally
intended to make something new that’s useful. Most of my projects so far I’ve just ordered
parts fresh from Amazon or somewhere like that. My mom’s family moved to the United States
from Vietnam in 1993. And my grandpa built this way back when, originally
because the area they were living in, was uh, well security was a very serious concern
there. My mom grew up in Xa Cảng Miền Tây, or
a neighborhood in West Saigon, so it’s known for being uh, pretty rough there. So uh, yeah, I was really excited to finally
see one of the things he’d made in person firsthand, and I wanted to share it. I hope you guys enjoyed and learned something
new. If you did, then I’d appreciate it if you
left a like, subscribe if you want to see more stuff like this in the future, and yeah,
see you next time.
