Dozens of surveillance cameras could appear on neighborhood streets in Chester

WHEN THAT HAPPENS, WHEN THEY START TO MOVE ON THAT, WE WILL GO TO ABC NEWS FOR A LIVE REPORT. CARS AND HOUSES HAVE BEEN SHOT UP. PEOPLE HAVE BEEN GETTING INJURED AND KILLED. NEIGHBORS IN CHESTER COUNTY HAVE BEEN DEALING WITH A RASH OF RECENT VIOLENCE. THEY HAD COMMUNITY MEETINGS AND CALLED IN SLIGHT AGENTS AND NOW THEY HOPE THE TECHNOLOGY CAN MAKE THE STREETS SAFER. WE GOT A FIRSTHAND LOOK AT THE TECHNOLOGY TODAY. Reporter: THERE WERE 130 CALLS INTO 911 FOR SHOTS FIRED IN CHESTER COUNTY LAST YEAR AND MOST OF THE CASES ARE STILL UNSOLVED. SOON UTILITY POLES AND LIGHT POLES LIKE THE ONES IN THIS LOT MAY BE USED TO HOLD CAMERAS, BUT UNLIKE CAMERAS OVER A SHOPPING CENTER OR RESTAURANT, THESE CAMERAS WILL BE ON YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD STREET.’S Reporter: IN PLACES AROUND CHESTER, YOU CAN SEE CRIME SCENE TAPE, SOME OF IT MONTHS OLD. IT IS A SCARY THING. WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT IT? SOME NEIGHBORS HAVE ALMOST GOTTEN USED TO THE SOUND OF GUNFIRE. CHESTER POLICE AND SHERIFF’S DEPUTY’S HAVE BEEN WORKING TOGETHER FOR MONTHS TO BE MORE VISIBLE TO FOCUS ON AREAS THAT HAVE SEEN MORE VIOLENCE. THE SHERIFF ALONG WITH MEMBERS OF COUNTY COUNSEL GOT A LOOK AT SOMETHING THAT COULD HELP, CAMERAS MOUNTED AROUND THE COUNTY. IT IS NO DIFFERENT THAN IF I HAD A DEPUTY ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD CAPTURING INFORMATION. Reporter: THEY ARE COMMONLY USED TO READ LICENSE TAX. THEY CONSIDER PLACING THEM IN NEIGHBOR GOODS AND IN MANY SHOOTING CALLS, THEY FIND LITTLE TO HELP THEM MAKE AN ARREST. WE HAVE NUMEROUS SHOOTING CASES WHERE THERE IS NO PHYSICAL EVIDENCE AND THE COMMUNITY EXPECTS US TO SOLVE THESE. Reporter: A DEMO FROM THE CAMERA SHOWED HOW IT CAN CAPTURE EVERY CAR THAT PASSES, POSSIBLY NOT ONLY READING ATTACK BUT SEEING A CRIME OR THE PERSON INVOLVED. THEY ARE WEB-BASED AND RUN OFF OF SOLAR POWER AND A SELL SIGNAL. NO ONE EXPECTS THIS TO BE THE ANSWER, BUT ONE TOOL THAT COULD MAKE A DIFFERENCE. IT PROBABLY WOULD HELP ON THE STREETS. THE SHERIFF TOLD ME HE WANTS TO START WITH 30 CAMERAS PLACED AROUND THE COUNTY AT A COST OF ABOUT $60,000 PER YEAR AND EXPAND THE PROGRAM FROM THERE. THE COUNTY COUNSEL WILL HAVE TO APPROVE ALL OF THIS. THE LICENSE PLATE READERS HAVE BEEN AROUND ON STREETS OF CHARLOTTE FOR YEARS. LAST YEAR, AND A CHANNEL 9 INVESTIGATION AWAY FROM THE SYSTEM CAN READ 3000 TAX AND ONE HOUR DEPENDING ON HOW BUSY
