Detective Superintendent Ian Whitehead – Public Protection

Detective Superintendent Ian Whitehead – Public Protection

Hi i’m Ian Whitehead and I’m currently the
head of Public Protection within Lancashire Constabulary. I work within headquarters
crime department. So the department has responsibility for all matters of public
protection and looking after vulnerable people. So we deal with situations of
domestic abuse, other vulnerable adults, we deal with child protection issues and
also the management of sex offenders and other high-risk areas of business. I think the challenge of working in our department is it can be quite complex.you have to be able to work with other people so in
particular our partners within health or local authority, probation, the third
sector, voluntary sector and actually the work can be quite challenging too
because we’re often dealing with people dealing with really difficult things within their lives and a lot of different difficult experiences
I think you need a certain amount of personal resilience to do that so I
think that’s probably the biggest challenge for us. The best thing about
working in our department is I think you get a real sense of satisfaction from
the work that we do, you know at the end of the day going home hoping that we’ve
made a real difference somebody’s life and that we’ve been able to keep people
safe that’s a real sense of satisfaction for us particularly when we are dealing with some of those people within our community our most vulnerable, so that’s
where I get my satisfaction.
