20170522 Ma Long Interview with CCTV

(2017 WTTC will be held in Düsseldorf from May 29 to June 5.) (This is the first major tournament in Tokyo Olympic cycle. The Grand Slam winner Ma Long is very looking forward to it.) (At ATTC last month in Wuxi, Ma Long lost to Korea’s Jeong Sangeun in the round of 32, causing a big upset.) (Ma Long is the leader of Team China. The defeat is a heavy blow to him as he failed to hold his line and lost to a foreign player.) (During the Rio Olympic cycle, Ma Long has not lost to a single non-Team China player for 4 years, and has won more than 180 consecutive matches.) (He has thought about meeting new challenges in the new Olympic cycle but has not expected to meet them so quickly.) Ma Long: Generally speaking, it is pretty good if a player can win the champions in 20% of the tournaments he attends per year because of the intense competition in table tennis. In the past 2 years, I won the champions in over 50% of the tournaments I attended each year. That may explain why people are so surprised by my defeat, especially to a foreign player. But people can understand my situation. (Understanding from others does not really make Ma Long easy. He is a perfectionist and he sets a extremely high standards for himself.) (Ma Long was down during the closed training session after his defeat.) (Ma Lin has just become Ma Long’s coach at the beginning of the closed training in Longgang, Shenzhen.) (These two Olympic champions in men’s singles have keen perspectives.) Ma Lin: From internal matches to major tournaments, Ma Long is very serious about every match and every stroke. I can see the essence of the best players from him. However, his seriousness may limit creative and agile performance to some extent. If he is too cautious, he will be out of creativity and will not exert all his characteristics to make it beyond imagination. He has already reached a peak after becoming the Grand Slam winner. But if he wants to reach even higher, it won’t be possible unless he makes use of every single cell of his body. (The new plastic ball is one of the causes of Ma Long’s loss at ATTC.) (The higher the level of a player is, the more sensitive he is to the ball and paddle.) (A small discrepancy leads to a great error.) (All players around the world are adapting to the new ball. Ma Long has made his plans.) Ma Long: On one hand, I need to increase the strength of the stroke. The old ball is more spiny. I can change the spins and the rhythms to give my opponent a hard time, which are weakened somehow by the new ball. Now the game is more about strength. I need to make some adjustments to my playing style. On the other hand, I need to adjust my mindset. In the previous Olympic cycle, I was pretty tense and was never satisfied, and I made it. In the new Olympic cycle, if I continue like that, my body, my form and new competitions may not allow me to achieve a result as good as that of the previous cycle. Everyone may need some time to adjust. I think I need to adjust some of my mindset. (2017 WTTC in Düsseldorf is the first major tournament in Tokyo Olympic cycle.) (The Grand Slam winner Ma Long will start again in the new cycle.) (Ma Lin hopes that Ma Long can be more creative and Ma Long is looking forward to a new self in the tournaments.)
