Stories of China 2019 marks Today’s highlights Pay Tribute to the Classics with Fresh Interpretation the 55th anniversary of the successful detonation of China’s first atomic bomb Bright Dairy & Food Gets You a First Look at the Classics Let us experience those times of honor again Three stages, multiple spaces Salute to all of the heroes worked for the “Two Bombs, One Satellite” project Accomplish earthshaking achievements Live an obscure life We want to straighten China’s backbone Never get bullied Science has no national boundaries but scientists have their motherlands Roaring Across the Horizon Roaring Across the Horizon The vast Kunlun Mountain is roaring across the horizon It sees all the beauty on earth In 1999 the movie Roaring Across the Horizon told the story of China’s tortuous process of developing the first atomic bomb to the public for the first time Are you willing to live your entire life in obscurity? In the movie thousands of scientists and soldiers represented by nuclear physicist Lu Guangda and the veteran, General Feng Shi on the vast northwest Gobi Desert lived an obscure life and worked hard and perseveringly For that oriental explosion that shocked the world they sacrificed their youth blood and even lives Three Two One Detonate Today let us experience the passion of roaring across the horizon again Roaring Across the Horizon On October 16th, 1964 3 p.m. Dong Qing, Host An unprecedented strong light burst out of Lop Nur area in Xinjiang A thumping sound roared across the land that’s been silent for thousands of years With the magnificent mushroom cloud rising China’s first atomic bomb was successfully detonated Since then, our country has possessed the strongest power to safeguard our homeland and protect our peace 2019 marks the 55th anniversary of the successful detonation of China’s first atomic bomb Today, let us experience those times of honor that’s long been carved on the monument of Chinese people again Let the world have a taste of China This is Stories of China with the exclusive sponsorship by Luzhou Laojiao, National Cellar 1573 Hello, everyone I am Dong Qing This program is broadcast with special arrangement by Bright Dairy & Food with more fresh nutrition Bright Dairy & Food, Bright for the Freshness In 1999, the movie Roaring Across the Horizon presented the panorama of China’s atomic bomb testing process for the first time The story is about General Feng Shi and the scientist Lu Guangda who lead the scientific research forces deep within the desert and overcome unimaginable hardships one after another It showcased the sublime spirit that our country will not surrender to the oppression of outside forces and can stand upright in the forest of nations in the world This movie has won the 20th Golden Rooster Awards for six awards, including best picture best director and best cinematography We are very glad to welcome the director of this movie, Chen Guoxing and one of the scriptwriters of this movie first-class writer Peng Jichao to our stage today Let’s welcome them both with applause Hello, Director Chen, welcome Hello, Mr. Peng, welcome Please be seated at the front stage In 1964 Director Chen, you weren’t even ten years old What could you remember about China’s first atomic bomb being successfully detonated? Director of the movie Roaring Across the Horizon, Chen Guoxing,
recalls the scene of the atomic bomb explosion I was really shocked I had never seen anything shaped like the mushroom cloud I think it’s something a great and strong country should have I was deeply moved by it and I remembered it Back then you probably never would have thought that you’d be making a film about it someday Movie director Chen Guoxing
tells the story of filmingRoaring Across the Horizon In 1998 I was already a director at Beijing Film Studio Beijing Film Studio wanted to produce a blockbuster as a gift to our country They picked Peng Jichao’s script called Malan Grass which was a film script and showed it to me When I read it I was drawn back to the impressions of the documentary I watched as a kid Detonate MovieRoaring Across the Horizon (excerpt) Then I went to Lop Nur with them Peng Jichao Chen Guoxing and saw the site This photo was taken when you and Mr. Peng visited the Malan Base as a group photo, right? I was really quite young at that time For the first time you went to the explosion center did you have a special feeling? My impression was the iron tower was torn down The 102-meter-high tower that held the atomic bomb after the nuclear explosion had been completely twisted The explosion center
of China’s first nuclear detonation test and scattered in the desert I was astonished But since then it has stayed like that? Right Whenever I see it I’d think of that brilliant history When you filmed over there have you ever encountered anything unexpected? The real location in that photo was too far away It couldn’t meet our needs of filming So we chose a location close to the base beside the road where we could have a smooth operation We built the iron tower from scratch With 60 tonnes of steel we built a tower that was more than 60 meters high And around the tower we built trenches and fortifications about the same size as the real ones to simulate the real nuclear testing and dispatched tanks and planes We dispatched tanks and planes to Xinjiang and arranged them around the detonation tower So when we were filming there were planes taking off and landing Tank forces Every day, there were more than 300 people on site When we were putting in every effort in filming the leaders from the General Staff Department came to visit They told me, “Director Chen we’d like to discuss something with you” I was thinking “What? The leader want to discuss with me?” I was confused He said this location was in a sensitive region There had been regular cruising satellites passing by to monitor He said recently those monitor satellites went from two to seven or eight At the time I said, “I don’t even know what you’re talking about” Are they domestic or foreign monitor satellites? Foreign He said, “Director Chen It’s because you’re making such a huge scene right here for your film It looks like you’re performing a nuclear test They think you’re reinitiating the nuclear test” He said, “Can you make an official announcement on the national newspaper to prove that you’re filming a storytelling movie in this region rather than performing nuclear tests?” Then we followed his request and made an announcement on People’s Daily After that, they said there were indeed fewer satellites They were all gone They knew we were making a film At the time, hundreds of thousands of people from every related business left their family and dedicated themselves to this cause On the pillars of a unit at the base there’s an antithetical couplet “Forgive your children for a cold heart, no righteousness and no filial piety Accomplish duty, responsibility and loyalty for our country” I think this is probably “Malan Spirit” that means you can sacrifice everything but you can’t sacrifice the national interest After intellectuals of that age accepted the mission they didn’t tell their parents nor their children They tell their wives, “I’m going on a business trip” and left Their wives also received orders that they couldn’t tell their families They also said, “I’m going on a business trip” But they had no idea that they were working in the same base Then, on a morning the different teams found out about each other in a testing in the river of the Gobi Comrade Wang Ruhui Comrade Wang Ruhui Wang Ruhui Coming, just a moment Coming Wang Ruhui Coffee I dropped the coffee in the water This plot also came from a true story, right? Right There was a tree on the side A large elm tree Right This couple met under that tree So later on, General Zhang Aiping was very moved by this story He said let’s call this tree “Couple Tree” Right I thought about it later It’s not like these people didn’t have feelings They hid their feelings for their parents and their children deep within themselves and turned them into the dedication towards their country A great movie goes hand in hand with a great script Mr. Peng’s movie script Malan Grass won the first prize of the second Xia Yan (Movie) Literature Award It’s not surprising at all that you won the prize because you have lived at Malan Base Manuscript ofMalan Grass for over 30 years You have so many lively materials and stories Can you tell us how those 30 years have been? I arrived at China’s nuclear testing base Peng Jichao located at Malan, Xinjiang on March of the spring of 1969 In the spring of 1998 exactly after this movie script won an award One of the scriptwriters ofRoaring Across the Horizon Peng Jichao
tells the story of China’s first atomic bomb I was transferred to Beijing During this time I had already lived in Malan for 30 years My first impression is that our mission is glorified and our duty is pretty great Since the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea the US had been threatening to use atomic bomb on China In reality, since the day the PRC was founded till the detonation of our atomic bomb our country had never got rid of the threat of atomic bomb for a single day So Chairman Mao said “I heard atomic bomb is just a thing but without that thing people won’t recognize your opinion” The atomic bomb project was named -“Project 596”. -Right Because in June of 1959 the former Soviet Union unilaterally repealed the agreement Here’s what it is It was officially initiated starting from 1958 The founding of Academy Nine (China Academy of Engineering Physics) as a team represented by Deng Jiaxian and the construction of the nuclear test base the Malan Base that’s been presented in the film were in small part due to the help from the former Soviet Union experts in the early stage But they retreated afterwards Premier Zhou said “Never mind them Let’s do it ourselves Try our best to develop our own atomic bomb in 5 to 8 years” Then Song Renqiong, the former minister of the Second Ministry of Machine Building Song Renqiong (1909-2005)
Founding general of the People’s Republic of China
First minister of the former Second Ministry of Machine Building went to China Academy of Engineering Physics and told the scientists “You study aerodynamics And we need to develop the ‘Dignity Bomb'” Later, people named the time when experts from the former Soviet Union retreated as the codename of the first atomic bomb which is called “596” June of 1959 was the date when the nuclear testing base was officially granted a number And Khrushchev said in 1963 “China can never develop the atomic bomb in 20 years” And after a year (1964) we finally developed our own atomic bomb So that’s why people also call the atomic bomb as “Dignity Bomb” Mr. Peng, you lived at Malan Base Is there anything that you’ll never forget for the rest of your life? Until the 1980s One of the scriptwriters of Roaring Across the Horizon,
Peng Jichao, tells the true story of Malan Base the lives of us Malan people were still very tough Although what they were doing was the most advanced business in our country cutting-edge science and technology their living conditions were the poorest and the most desolate What’s most memorable to me is my colleague’s child His name is Ming I watched him grow up He was held in hands by others until he was one, two, three years old all the way till he was 12 years old Children in Malan can only play with stones after birth When you went home every day children would take a handful of stones from their pockets They never saw swimming pool They didn’t know about swimming In the 1980s, there were televisions Children in Malan suddenly thought “I never knew humans could swim” It was that summer when a team wanted to build a fish pond There happened to be a heavy rain that filled the pond Those children told each other about finally being able to swim A few kids went swimming Some of them swam for a while and left Ming said “I’m not done yet I’m going back” Until they had dinner that night they never saw that kid return Was he still swimming there? When they went over there this child was already drowned in the water that’s only a meter deep We buried him on the Gobi Desert His mother already cried her eyes dry until she couldn’t cry anymore She kept saying with a hoarse voice “Ming, you wanted to eat cookies I didn’t buy you any You wanted to visit the zoo We never had time to take you inland to visit the zoo You wanted toys But we have nothing in Malan” Hundreds and thousands of people gathered at the Gobi That day, cookies were sold out in Malan Everything children can toy with was sold out The people in Malan felt “Why are we treating our children so poorly?” The commander heard about this and said “Children on the Gobi are still children They also want to swim They also like water” After that, the first swimming pool was built in Malan Children in Malan grew up with their parents on the Gobi What they sacrificed were the most normal and ordinary things Just like when they think of the zoo they wanted to see lions and tigers There was nothing over there They only saw a few trees and a patch of flowers in Malan since they were little kids They thought that was the most beautiful place After they traveled to the inland they found out the world was so wide and filled with marvels I think these children are the youngest startup entrepreneurs in Malan and the history of our republic So I think these children who grew up in Malan Base wherever they go when they are mature they’ll definitely think back to that place I saw many reports later Scientists and soldiers even after they left Malan Base before they leave this world they’d still wish to be buried back in Malan Base again That’s right Just like Zhu Guangya Zhu Guangya (1924-2011)

Founding general of the People’s Republic of China
Commander of engineering troops
and the Special Engineering Headquarters who first led the engineering troops to build the base Malan Martyr Cemetery Featured documentaryWe’re Walking on the Boulevard (excerpt) Most of them are ordinary soldiers They rest in that place forever In our cases, we thought after they passed away they took a corner of the Gobi as their permanent camp They rest there forever and stay with the accomplishment forever They stay with the people who are still putting in every effort there If they knew about this they would feel glad I remember Mr. Qian Sanqiang once said “In the future, noble people would burst into tears facing our ashes” Even until now, my comrades are still living at that distant and vast Gobi Generation after generation they keep putting in the effort for the greatness of our country and to achieve our dreams of having a strong military I would like to express my deepest respect to them on this stage Because all of these people who are long resting in that land are all noble souls who gave up their lives for the greatness of Chinese nation They are memories that our republic will never forget Today, we are looking forward to the acting part of the movie Roaring Across the Horizon on stage Let’s follow the Director Tian Qinxin to go check out how the table read is like for our young actors National Cellar 1573
Stories of China Welcome to Stories of China Table read ofRoaring Across the Horizon Tian Qinxin
Chief Theatre Director ofStories of China
Deputy Dean of National Theatre of China I am Tian Qinxin, the chief theater director of our show Hello, everyone. I am actor Zheng Kai I will be playing the character Zheng Kai, Actor Lu Guangda in this play Hello, everyone. I am actor Zhang Tong I will be playing the character Zhang Tong, Actor Feng Shi in this play Hello, everyone. I am Fan Zhibo Fan Zhibo, Actor from the National Theatre of China I’ll be playing Wang Ruhui I am actor Tang Xu Tang Xu, Actor I’ll be playing Chen Zhizhong I am an actor from the National Theatre of China My name is Zhang Yicong Zhang Yicong, Actor from the National Theatre of China I’ll be playing Li Yifan I’ll be playing Ma Lan Wang Yixiao, Actress I’ll be playing Molasov Abliz Nie, Actor I am the chief scriptwriter Zhang Kunpeng
Chief Scriptwriter of Stories of China of Stories of China, Zhang Kunpeng Here we have the movie Roaring Across the Horizon We picked from this movie the theme we’d like to express to pay tribute to all the heroes in the “Two Bombs, One Satellite” project Back then, they had this saying “Accomplish earthshaking achievements. Live an obscure life” What was that for? For our dream of a powerful country For China not to be bullied The character Lu Guangda is not only a real historical character He is the epitome of many scientists in the “Two Bombs, One Satellite” project They truly utilized their expertise and knowledge to change China’s fate Applause for you Science has no national boundaries but scientists have their motherlands The best way for us to pay respect is by putting our effort to practice Now we are going to show you all our stage We have three stages The drama will be presented Main stage in a multi-dimensional space Because this is the first time that our main stage has been divided into two parts and there’s a corridor in the middle it’s very difficult this time Stage 2 We have a second stage and a third stage Stage 3 which are designed as in films and TV series Table read ofRoaring Across the Horizon Now let’s read the script The central leadership transferred you back for you to develop the atomic bomb But I don’t know how We have to win this battle Otherwise China will have no say in global military affairs China will have less say in front of the world Soldiers only fight to win I think for the part of Feng Shi, he has to be firm with his eyes shining like torches He’s that kind of a soldier Soldiers only fight to win You can say it like that I understand Understand All right. Again Rehearsal ofRoaring Across the Horizon Soldiers only fight to win I don’t believe I can’t win this battle Do you have confidence? Yes We promise to finish the mission For this character, General Feng Shi he’s best at fighting battles But he was given the mission to aid Lu Guangda in developing the atomic bomb so he has to use another way of sacrifice and dedication That is to cover the logistics Cut the supplies in the command center of the base Even if there’s only one mouthful of food left leave it to the scientists If the calculation is based on the accuracy of six digits the workload will increase several times People tend to back down against difficulties But we have to hold on The calculation is out It is the same that of the seventh and eighth time We calculated nine times The paper used for checking filled up tens of sacks We’re finally sure of it They’re wrong Zheng Kai You’re way too important right here You have to bring out your emotions Since it has to be calculated to the sixth digit to prove that six digits were all correct then those Soviet experts were wrong This is a true story I did some research beforehand In the play, they used abacus for calculation This is actually true We calculated nine times The paper used for checking filled up tens of sacks We’re finally sure of it They’re wrong We are right They spent a year and a half, almost two years I think this is the living example of the wisdom and diligence of the great Chinese people Let’s continue Comrade Guangda you’re going back to Beijing with me There’s so much work left to do How can I leave? You have to be healthy to develop atomic bomb I can’t drag down the detonation mission just because I have to go to the hospital You need to go back to Beijing for your health That’s an order from the central leadership Who can take responsibility if the detonation mission goes wrong? Sir you’d better support him otherwise he’ll regret it for the rest of his life As long as I see the success of the atomic bomb detonation I won’t regret even if I give up my life Accomplish earthshaking achievements Live an obscure life We have to straighten China’s backbone Never get bullied Science has no national boundaries but scientists have their motherlands For that I, Lu Guangda would give up my life for my country Just like that, I feel really I feel really moved I’m really moved I’m actually not a sentimental person I never acted like this before Bright Fresh Moment, Relive the Memory Atomic bomb and the “Two Bombs, One Satellite” project have given China a backbone and even a spirit I think we should inherit this spirit of the backbone and pass them down for the generations to come because it’s the core of China As the creators of this show this is our sublime tribute to the heroes in the “Two Bombs, One Satellite” project So we’re giving it our everything and get the job well done National Cellar 1573
Stories of China Waiting Room In the movie Roaring Across the Horizon Scientist Lu Guangda and General Feng Shi are based on real people One of them is the merited scientist in “Two Bombs, One Satellite” one of the founders and pioneers of China’s nuclear industry Mr. Deng Jiaxian Deng Jiaxian (1924-1986)
“Two Bombs,
One Satellite” Medal winner
Nuclear physicist,
academician of Chinese Academy
cdcof Sciences(CAS)
Former president of China Academy
of Engineering Physics And General Feng Shi is based on China’s first nuclear commander who led the construction of the nuclear testing base and directly participated in the mission of testing the first atomic bomb General Zhang Yunyu Zhang Yunyu (1917-2008)
First commander of China’s nuclear testing base Now I would like to welcome the son of General Zhang Yunyu, Zhang Lütian and the person who accompanied Deng Jiaxian in his last years his bodyguard, You Zehua Let’s welcome them both with applause Hello, Minister Zhang Hello, Doctor You Welcome you both Hello, welcome Your father is a veteran who experienced the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression the War of Liberation and the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea Zhang Yunyu That’s right. The Shangganling Campaign is his final actual battle Zhang Yunyu
during the commanding of the Shangganling Campaign When he came back from North Korea in August of 1958 he got a phone call It said “There’s a change in your job Zhang Lütian, Son of General Zhang Yunyu come to Beijing at once It’s hard to explain in a call” He went to Beijing in a rush the second day and went to the home of Senior General Chen Geng Chen Geng (1903-1961)
Senior founding general of PRC
Former deputy minister of Ministry
of National Defense of PRC
Deputy director of the former Commission for Science,
Technology and Industry for National Defense As he sat down, Chen Geng said “Zhang Yunyu, go develop the atomic range” On October 29th he went to Dunhuang MovieRoaring Across the Horizon (excerpt) After he arrived at Dunhuang he joined the survey brigade formed by the Shangqiu Infantry Academy Then they started traveling around for several days inspecting and thinking People from the survey brigade said this place was chosen by the experts from the former Soviet Union Site picked by experts from the former Soviet Union It met the requirements for a 20,000-tonne equivalent TNT test After a few days of inspection Son of the first nuclear commander Zhang Yunyu
tells the story of the nuclear testing base’s construction he thought the site wouldn’t work He said “Nuclear tests in the US and the Soviet Union already reached ten million tonnes Why are we only doing 20,000 tonnes? 20,000 tonnes wouldn’t meet the strategic needs of our nuclear weapons’ development The Mogao Caves, Mingsha Mountain, the Great Wall of the Han Dynasty and ancient beacon towers are all located here This earthquake caused by the explosion will damage these cultural relics If these cultural relics are damaged we will be felons in history” When he reported his thoughts to the administrative committee of the General Staff Department Senior General Chen Geng said “If this doesn’t work, find another one” Just like that, he led MovieRoaring Across the Horizon (excerpt) part of the survey brigade to find a proper place On December 24th they went west out of Yumen Pass and traveled towards the direction of Lop Nur into the “Sea of Death” In reality, since the founding of the PRC the first people to enter the “Sea of Death” are these people from the survey brigade During the inspection they experienced cold, sandstorm drought, water shortage, and loss of way They experienced a lot in those days When they slept at night they covered themselves with everything, including quilts coats, leather jackets and leather hats When they woke up in the morning their faces were covered in frost The quilt is frozen at the top and couldn’t be removed They had to uncover themselves from their feet like this and came out from below to uncover the quilt When the sandstorm attacked they could only hide inside the cars After two days the storm wore off all the paint on the cars Finally, they found an ideal location in the northwestern region of Lop Nur No one lived there in a range of several hundred kilometers There was no arable land or ranch So they smashed the first pile into the vast desert This became our country’s nuclear weapon testing field Days of hard work didn’t go in vain Everyone was delighted They found a testing field but they still needed a place to establish residence They went to a place the other day Mount Tianshan to its north, Bosten Lake to its south Waiting Room Zheng Kai as Lu Guangda A little stream flowed through Some Malan grass was growing there It was spring at the time, so there were some Malan flowers It also had rich underground water It was such an ideal place to live at So everyone was very excited Some people said to name it “The Science City” or “The Atom City” But then my father pointed at those Malan flowers and said “Look at those Malan flowers Malan Flowers They’re blossoming so well in such harsh environments Let’s just call this place ‘Malan Village'” From then on, a place called “Malan” was born on the northwestern Gobi Their hardship has a romance to it Looking back at it the decision then was so wise and carried such profound significance Right. Several decades later, he said “It was a right decision to move from Dunhuang to Lop Nur Several decades have gone by but that is still a nice location” When did you move to Malan Village and stay with your father? I was in the second grade back then 9 years old Zhang Lütian in his childhood in Malan When we got up and went to school he was already at work When we went to bed at night he wasn’t home yet Considering that the testing field was very far from the living quarters when he was in the testing field, he would stay there for months So it was quite difficult for us to have a meal together As a child growing up in Malan Base you witnessed your father’s generation dedicate everything to China’s nuclear weapon industry Malan has too many moving stories No matter generals, soldiers scientists, technical personnel staff or family they all made their contributions When they just went there, soldiers lived in tents and their family lived in caves A child said to his dad “I want to visit the zoo” His dad didn’t know what to do and took him to the company’s pigsty He stayed there for half a day I had a classmate who went to Malan with his parents in 1961 When he just arrived at the base and got off the car it was all black and yellow in the Gobi A sandstorm was coming Sandstorms in Xinjiang are very powerful It blew past and carried the child away with it The soldier chased after him for about one kilometer and finally brought him back The two of them both became “sand men” The child’s mother held him and never let go She looked at the child’s father in tears “Why did you bring us to this ‘hell’?” The child cried and asked his mother “Mom, why did we come to such a gusty place?” His mom patted the dust off him wiped his tears and said softly “Because dad is here” Because dad is here This bothered him for many years to come Why did dad have to be here? What was dad doing here? Until 1964 the first atomic bomb was successfully detonated He grew up more and understood things better He understood his dad established business there Dad’s business was his country’s business He became so proud Under your father’s influence you also joined the military later And you also completed nuclear testing missions with your father Can you tell us what that was like? For every testing we used to call it “one testing, full progress” All branches of the military would send out inspection brigades to the nuclear testing field to examine all kinds of results of the nuclear weapon explosion We were on this mission Zhang Lütian on mission at Malan Base and my father happened to be the chief commander of that testing Zhang Yunyu He went to different brigades to inspect their work He had problems with his lumbar spine He was suffering from them again I saw him bending to 45 degrees General Zhang Yunyu’s son Zhang Lütian
tells the story with his father but he was still bending down and inspecting One brigade after another one work order after another I went to the command center in the evening I took a leave and went to visit him He was bending over the table taking a rest. His waist hurt too much for him to sit straight Zhang Tong as Feng Shi I massaged him and thought when I was a child my father used to carry me on his back and went to have meals I felt his back and waist were so strong Zhang Yunyu Now I’ve grown up but my father is old His strong physique has become a bending body But his perseverance for his cause has deeply impressed me Zhang Yunyu 2008 was the 50th anniversary of the foundation of the nuclear testing base Your father was in a poor health condition then But he still wrote a poem to express his congratulations We can look at this poem together Horses ride
along the west border Malan flowers greet the morning Dressing delicately for 50 years Its charm is known by the world The inheritance rises again The sky and earth are ever vast I’m excited to see the new generation in Malan Start up businesses in a prosperous society The first character of each line forms another line Malan spirit. Base prosper He passed away in that same year, right? Right He told me when he stayed at the hospital “This year is the 50th anniversary of the foundation of the base I really want to go back and take a look” I said “When you’re discharged, I’ll go there with you” But I didn’t expect after only a few days his condition worsened and he was transferred to an intensive care unit He thought he could never go back again so he wrote a letter of congratulations to the base party committee with which he attached this poem The inheritance rises again Malan flowers greet the morning Its charm is known by the world The sky and earth are ever vast Dressing delicately for 50 years Horses ride
along the west border Start up businesses in a prosperous society I’m excited to see the new generation in Malan After he became severely ill his perception wasn’t so clear I was with him one time when I heard him mumbling something So I got closer and listened Three million, three million tonnes Three million tonnes is the TNT equivalence of China’s first hydrogen bomb explosion I thought my father’s brain was still living the experience of those years when he started up the business Zhang Yunyu With the ambition and pride filled in their chests they wrote the most brilliant chapter of life at that place called “Sea of Death” Hello, Zehua. In 1984 you were with Deng Jiaxian when he finished the final nuclear test You Zehua
Deng Jiaxian’s body guard in his life and returned to Beijing It was 1984 Deng Jiaxian’s body guard, You Zehua,
tells Deng Jiaxian’s story when alive his final nuclear test in his life He was very happy returning to Beijing His wife asked him what was going on that day He said the second generation of boats passed through the bridge His wife, Aunt Xu asked him what the second generation of boats was He said it was a secret But he was already sick that year He got sick twice in 1984 Deng Jiaxian I said, “Mr. Deng, you need to go to the hospital” He said “I don’t have the time” Deng Jiaxian’s body guard, You Zehua,
tells Deng Jiaxian’s story when alive In Mr. Deng’s life he experienced 32 nuclear tests Clip of Deng Jiaxian in work and was the commander for 15 times Because of his line of work his body was seriously affected It eventually led to cancer When he knew about his conditions he felt it was too soon He felt he could do much more for our country Deng Jiaxian After his second surgery in one early morning he said “You, let’s take a walk outside” He had a habit When his health deteriorated the first thing that came to his mind would be bookstores We went to Xinhua bookstore first He stayed there for a while and he said he wanted to go to Tian’anmen because Tian’anmen is a symbol of China When he came back from overseas 1950 Deng Jiaxian returning to China from overseas his thoughts were to go to Tian’anmen Then we took the bus Deng Jiaxian After we got off, we walked to Tian’anmen Square When we were standing in front of the Monument to the People’s Heroes Deng Jiaxian’s body guard, You Zehua,
tells Deng Jiaxian’s story when alive he was in a heavy mood He said “You will I ever have a chance to come back again?” I said “Mr. Deng you will be better When you’ve recovered, I’ll come here with you often” Deng Jiaxian I didn’t expect he would pass away a week later During the last days of his life did he ever say anything that was memorable or left you with a great impression? A month before Mr. Deng passed away his wife sat beside his bed Deng Jiaxian Xu Luxi
Deng Jiaxian’s wife holding his hands He told Aunt Xu he said “If there’s a next life I’ll choose China again I’ll choose the cause of nuclear weapons again and I’ll choose you again” I suddenly thought of an anecdote Mr. Wang Ganchang was 53 years old when he accepted this national top secret mission Then he used an alias Wang Jing On a Lunar New Year’s Eve he and Deng Jiaxian Deng Jiaxian Wang Ganchang were making toasts to each other in the tent Deng Jiaxian held his glass and said “I called you Comrade Wang Jing for more than a decade Let me call you Comrade Wang Ganchang for once” After he said that they both shed tears I think this is what we just said our scientists’ noble faith of dedicating their lives to the country and serving the country with science Next let’s take a look at some segments from Roaring Across the Horizon performed on the stage Luzhou Laojiao National Cellar 1573, Taste the Moment Stories of China, a Taste of China for the World Fall, 1958
Lu Guangda’s house, Beijing Will two months of coffee be enough? Lu Guangda
Returned nuclear physicist from overseas I’ll prepare your clothes until late fall Is that all right? Pack clothes for all seasons Wang Ruhui
Returned nuclear physicist from overseas
Lu Guangda’s wife Can you tell me where you’re going? Ruhui, we have rules All right. I’ll pack a whole year of coffee for you And clothes for all seasons Ruhui Whatever you do I’ll always support you I know You have your dreams When we were in the US we achieved our own dreams Now we’re back in China we have to achieve the dream of our country Old friend from school, I do know you, right? Your trip this time will it be one year? Three years? Five years? I remember you once told me you also want to become an excellent physicist just like Madame Curie As an old friend from school I also know you very well You’re not only my wife you’re also an excellent scientist You only know to interrupt me No matter how long it is I’ll eventually come back Wait for me Work fast Don’t make me wait too long The central leadership transferred you back Conference room at the headquarters, Beijing for you to develop the atomic bomb I said on the battle field of the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea China must develop its own nuclear weapons Feng Shi
chief commander at the atomic bomb base But I don’t know how to develop it Chen Zhizhong, leader at the headquarters The Americans know how The Soviets know how. We’re the only one that doesn’t But who can give you an atomic bomb for free? We need to do it ourselves Feng Shi you were assigned with such a tough mission which means you have the trust of the leadership Thanks for the trust by the leadership To be honest the Americans threatened us with atomic bombs on the battlefield I want China to have our own atomic bomb so badly even in my dreams But I don’t have the experience at all None of us has experience We were forced to develop atomic bombs We are threatened and blackmailed by nuclear weapons Chairman Mao and the Central Committee of CPC decided we have to develop our own nuclear weapons Where are the experts, sir? Is there any expert in China who can develop atomic bombs? Li Yifan, scientist Is there? How could there not be? Ma Lan, physicist There isn’t That’s why we need to start the development You’re asking the obvious question Right now indeed, our technical team isn’t strong enough and our research conditions are relatively poor but we have the aid from the Soviet Union experts and the endeavor from our own people Comrades we must win this battle Otherwise China will have no say in global military affairs China will have less say in front of the world Sir, we must win this battle We must accomplish the mission Feng Shi Yes, sir Why don’t you say anything? Sir in the battlelfield of the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea we moved through Changbai Mountain and Heilongjiang River to protect our country and homeland Now the war is over I’ve accepted such a tough mission Sir, you know soldiers only fight to win But the most crucial element of this battle is what kind of soldiers you’re giving me Sir I’m here to report Hello, Dr. Lu I’ll take this for you Dr. Lu Guangda You’ve traveled a long way Hello, sir This is a nuclear physicist returning from the US Feng Shi here’s your soldier Hello, sir My name is Lu Guangda I graduated from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the US I majored in quantum physics Comrade Lu, hello My name is Feng Shi Dr. Lu gave up his life in the US and came back to fight the great war with us Chairman Mao said without that thing called atomic bomb people wouldn’t recognize your opinion That’s why I chose to come back I want our country to stand in front of the world Dr. Lu Are you willing to live your entire life in obscurity? I’m prepared for an obscure life You cannot tell anyone in your family can you do that? No one wants to hide from their family but I can do that Sir our research conditions aren’t good enough but I’ll make every possible effort We’ll definitely make it a success Science has no national boundaries but scientists have their motherlands Sir, please stay assured We must succeed Feng Shi Sir, don’t worry From this day on I’ll stay with them Give it my everything Comrades, are you confident? Yes, we promise to accomplish the mission Dunhuang Attention Right dress. Eyes front. At ease Attention Sir, all troops are gathered Awaiting instruction At ease Yes, sir At ease Comrades we just returned to our country from the battlefields of the Korean War We can’t go home, or take off our uniforms because we have to accomplish a significant mission given to us by the Party and our country Do you have the confidence to accomplish the mission? Yes Remember our policy for confidentiality No questions are allowed about where we’re going and what we’re doing Let’s go Yes, sir. Attention all, left turn March ahead Dunhuang Nice, this is so gorgeous Magnificent Dreaming about flying for a thousand years when can we soar above the sky You will soon turn into birds Molasov, expert from the Soviet Union Boom. Fly to the sky Comrade Molasov what did you mean by that? I mean this place will soon become the atomic bomb testing base Right here? Yes Build the atomic bomb testing base at Dunhuang? Right The location near here is the best place for atomic bomb testing Comrade Molasov these caves were built since the Former Qin Dynasty Through Northern Wei, Sui and Tang dynasties people have kept excavating them These ancient paintings from more than a thousand years ago contain the effort of so many artists in ancient China It is wisdom Comrade Molasov I firmly oppose building the testing base here General don’t get too excited for these beautiful frescos I also like them The testing field is 160 kilometers from here I believe it won’t cause any harm to these frescos But Comrade Molasov, do you know that these frescos are very fragile How can you guarantee the shock wave from the atomic bomb will not cause any harm to them? These are passed down by the Chinese ancestors We can’t afford to damage them Otherwise we will be felons for later generations It will be fine for atomic bombs with small TNT equivalence It won’t damage Dunhuang Small TNT equivalence? Right But we want to make atomic bombs with large TNT equivalence In the future, we will build hydrogen bombs with tens of millions tonnes of TNT equivalence It’s enough for the Soviet Union to have hydrogen bombs We can protect you It’s better to have it ourselves than others to have it Protect Dunhuang Report to the leadership Draft the report And also, sir about the major move we’re making Write it in the same report All right When we report to the leadership we need a preselected location Sir we already have a location Westbound “Sea of death” Lop Nur Nuclear Weapon Research Institute, Beijing Dr. Lu the experts from the Soviet Union burnt the drawings I salvaged some of them Part of it is burnt Let’s try to piece the rest together We’re on our own to make it work Farewell We will try our best to catch on Goodbye I think we’re like orphans Nonsense. We are warriors Well said Without computers we’ll use abacuses If a single time doesn’t work, we’ll do it twice If twice doesn’t work either, then we’ll do it thrice We must save enough time for the project to get on track Understood, Dr. Lu Rest assured, Dr. Lu Nuclear Weapon Research Institute, Beijing Dr. Lu The data for the general mechanics calculation is ready It doesn’t match with the mathematical model Core data for mechanics doesn’t match, too In the core data for mechanics, how many digits did you save after the decimal point? Five digits Five digits won’t work What about the central stress during the explosion? It’s very far from the approximate data given by the Soviet Union experts We don’t have computers The data comes from abacus calculations by people in different groups In the core data, there should be six digits after the decimal point Repeat the calculations Repeat the calculations? If the calculation is based on the accuracy of six digits the workload for checking will increase several times I know that People tend to back down against difficulties But we need to hold on Dr. Lu What’s wrong? It’s nothing My stomach hurts a little It’s fine Carry on Nuclear testing base The commander told me the scientists already spent their meal time and sleep time on conducting research We need to work harder and build the living area before scientists come to the base Sir, please stay assured The engineer regiment promises to perform the early-stage base construction mission with high standard The automobile regiment promises every scientist can drink fresh water The meteorology regiment has built multiple inspection stations on the perimeter of the base We promise to provide scientists with accurate short to mid term weather forecast All right Make every preparation for the battle and win this tough war Yes, sir Nuclear Weapon Research Institute, Beijing Six digits, are you sure? I am, Dr. Lu How many sets of data are left? We’ve calculated all of them They are the same as that of the seventh and eighth calculations Then they are wrong Li Yifan, Ma Lan tell me with your consciences are you sure? Dr. Lu, we are sure We are right We are right We calculated for nine times We’re finally right The paper used for checking filled up tens of sacks We can finally prove they’re wrong We are right What are you so excited for? Sir we got the general mechanics data We calculated for nine times They are wrong We are right For the final five times, we got the exact results Are you sure? We are Great, that’s wonderful You finally solved the theoretical calculations I have to inform the comrades on the frontline of this news This will cheer them up Half a year later Outdoor canteen at the nuclear testing base Sir the railway is cut off, and we are clearing the way Sir, supplies can’t get in I’m afraid we’ll be in a food shortage Except the patients the other soldiers can only drink vegetable soup Engineer regiment commander make every effort to clear out the railway The landslide hasn’t stopped yet There’s no way to clear out the way The scientists just arrived at the base did you save enough supplies for them? Yes But it won’t hold for long Here’s what we’ll do Cut the supplies for the command center at the base Give the scientists all we have Give them all the supplies Even if there’s only one mouthful of food left leave it to the scientists Do you agree? You don’t? We agree It’s unfair to give us all the food We should all be treated as equals Lu Guangda’s office at the nuclear testing base Dr. Lu, there’s a situation The cold wind from Siberia suddenly howled over this morning It’s attacking us hard And it will last for about a week This is a natural disaster All equipment must be protected from cold Lu Sir I heard about the situation How do we keep the equipment warm, you’re in charge The equipment can’t be left in cold They have to be protected just like humans It’s simple Let them wear more clothes to stay warm Did you hear that? Inform the troops quilts, blankets, coats, felted mattress use all of that on the equipment Cover them and keep them warm Yes, sir Hurry Feng I have a question for you Has Beijing replied to our explosion plan yet? They replied They said it needs further improvement In a couple days Beijing will send an expert to our base to tackle this problem with us We need to determine a detonation plan as soon as possible Without a plan many follow-ups can’t happen I know There’s still much work to be done Outdoor canteen at the nuclear testing base Please sit down. I’ll bring you the meal Sure Hello Here you go That’s so little Professor Wang the conditions here are so harsh You deserve better treatment I’m here to work not here to enjoy life Lu why don’t you eat? Everyone’s saving for you We want you to stay in good health Without a detonation plan I can’t eat even if you cook me the most delicious cuisine Here, eat this bun You’re talking nonsense You stay up late every night, and you don’t eat Your body can’t handle that I know you’re worried But you have to eat, no matter the circumstance I’ll skip the meal I need to do some calculations Lu This is nonsense if you don’t eat It’s so dusty here Is there any sand in your meal? Dr. Lu Dr. Lu Guangda Lu Guangda Dr. Lu Get the doctor at once Lu Guangda’s office at the nuclear testing base Why did he pass out? It’s definitely because his immune system has deteriorated What’s the cause? I’m afraid there’s internal lesion I need to further inspect You must use the best medicine No problem Although conditions are harsh here you must make sure he stays in good health No problem Take care, doctor Get some more cold water to make the towel colder Show me the files of the plan Okay Is there any problem? We’re still discussing which plan is feasible What I came here for this time is to figure out with you which detonation plan to use Wonderful The Soviet Union used air burst France and Britain used ground burst These two don’t seem to work for us Tower burst Tower burst works for us Tower burst Guangda Ruhui Am I dreaming? Why are you here? The central leadership approved Professor Wang to join our project She’s the expert to study the detonation plan with us When did you arrive? Last night The research institute sent me to study the detonation plan No one told me you were here I just arrived at the base last night and this morning I saw you pass out It’s all right Come Help me look at the plan I’ll help you optimize the plan You stay in bed and have a good rest Don’t play hero again Ma, Li, let’s go out Don’t Get the files for me right now I’ll start to work at once All right, sister Two months later Lu Guangda’s office at the nuclear testing base Is the optical measurement plan reasonable? It is, Professor Wang Tower burst is best for optical measurement What about the mechanical measurement plan? The mechanical measurement plan is feasible How about the physical measurement plan? It’s also feasible If we use tower burst the construction is expected to finish within the allotted time Are you sure? I designed the mechanics structure It’s expected to finish within the allotted time Slow down, careful In other words our technical capability and equipment can support the construction, right? Yes Slow down Look, after so many iterations the tower burst plan is really feasible This is the best plan Awesome China’s first atomic bomb will be successfully detonated with tower burst Sir Sir Comrade Guangda Sir, you came here at just the right time This is the tower burst plan we just determined Sit down I’ll report your plan to the central leadership at once Comrade Guangda, return to Beijing with me Okay, I’ll go report with you I’m taking you back to stay at the hospital I came here to send supplies to the base and bring you back to Beijing This is an order from the central leadership Thank you for your concern, sir The detonation plan is determined You can go back No Although the detonation plan is determined there’s still a series of work to be done This is an order You must recover your health to make excellent atomic bombs That’s right. Go back and recover Everyone else and I are here We’ll wait for you to come back Your health is more important than everything else Nonsense Atomic bomb is more important than my health Comrade Guangda this is not your decision to make Sir please allow me to make this decision I must stay here Since the Soviet Union experts retreated until we determined the detonation plan I know the detonation best I’m the most experienced There are two reasons why I must stay First the atomic bomb’s detonation time is closing in Directors of each engineering department must stay on duty I know the plan and the engineering layout the best Second so many people suffered so much and lived through so much I can’t drag down the detonation mission just because I have to go to the hospital You must return to Beijing for treatment This is an order from the central leadership If the detonation mission is hindered who can be responsible? I don’t want to jeopardize the whole plan because I need treatment That’s being responsible to the leadership to the central government and to our country Sir, I think you should support his decision otherwise he’ll regret it for the rest of his life I gave up excellent research conditions overseas and came back to China to see the new China become powerful sooner and see a successful atomic bomb detonation sooner Even if the cost is my life I won’t have any regrets Accomplish earthshaking achievements Live an obscure life We must straighten China’s backbone Never get bullied Science has no national boundaries but scientists have their motherlands Because of this I, Lu Guangda am willing to give up my life for my country October 16th, 1964 Material Nuclear testing base Ten, nine, eight, seven, six Material five, four, three, two, one Detonate On October 16th, 1964 15:00 China’s first atomic bomb broke out an earthshaking roar As the first people to invent gunpowder under the leadership of the CPC the Chinese people finally stood up and proved their strong vitality and creativity with the thunder of modern science We made it! On October 16th, 1964, 15:00 China’s first atomic bomb was successfully detonated From this day on no one can ever blackmail China or threaten China In order to develop China’s poor national defense technology for the new China’s national defense For China to stand firmly in the forest of nations As a Chinese scientist to join in such a great cause I am extremely honored As a Chinese military man to join in such a great cause I am extremely honored As a Chinese to join in such a great cause I am extremely honored Salute Luzhou Laojiao National Cellar 1573, Taste the Moment Stories of China, a Taste of China for the World Salute Welcome our chief theater director Director Tian Qinxin Roaring Across the Horizon Let the world have a taste of China This is Stories of China with the exclusive sponsorship by Luzhou Laojiao, National Cellar 1573 This program is broadcast with special arrangement by Bright Dairy & Food with more fresh nutrition Bright Dairy & Food, Bright for the Freshness National Cellar 1573
Stories of China On May 28th 2018 on the conference of academicians of CAS and CAE President Xi Jinping praised that those people who accomplished earthshaking achievements but lived an obscure life are heroes of the Chinese nation We are very glad to invite one of the first nuclear weapon scientists in China He designed the core components for the first atomic bomb in our country and joined grand nuclear testing for more than ten times Let us welcome the former president of China Academy of Engineering Physics Academician Hu Renyu Bright Fresh Moment, Relive the Memory Academician Hu is already 88 years old this year (2019) Welcome to our show Hu Renyu
88 years old
Academician of Chinese Academy
of Sciences (CAS)
Former president of China Academy
of Engineering Physics Thank you We saw a shot of you in the documentary several minutes before the atomic bomb detonation Ten, nine, eight, seven, six Material This one This is Academician Hu at the time Hu Renyu How did you start your journey on the path of nuclear weapon research? I’m from the Institute of Modern Physics, CAS The president of the institute at the time was Qian Sanqiang Qian Sanqiang (1913-1992)
“Two Bombs, One Satellite” Medal winner
Nuclear physicist
Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) Qian Sanqiang told me four people were transferred to this new institute from the Institute of Modern Physics The first one was Deng Jiaxian Deng Jiaxian (1924-1986)
“Two Bombs, One Satellite” Medal winner
Nuclear physicist
Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS)
Former president of China Academy of Engineering Physics He already reported in The second person he talked to was me The third one was Wang Fangding Wang Fangding (1928-)
Nuclear Chemist
Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) He studied radiochemistry The fourth one was Lin Chuanliu Lin Chuanliu (1928-)
Electronics scientist
Researcher at China Academy
of Engineering Physics He studied electronics I understood at once when I heard it These four people are in four majors They’re gathered to make all kinds of preparations 88-year-old nuclear physicist Hu Renyu tells the story
of joining the testing of China’s first atomic bomb for the development of China’s atomic energy So from then on I walked into the gates of nuclear science When you guessed that you were about to accept this mission how did you feel? Since my country entrusted me 88-year-old nuclear physicist Hu Renyu tells the story
of joining the testing of China’s first atomic bomb with such an important job I was so happy I was silently happy inside But there’s something I was very uncertain about I wasn’t sure how I should perform my job to not slow down the research of atomic bomb? I had absolutely no idea So I felt very uneasy When the experts from the Soviet Union pulled out leaders from Academy Nine (China Academy of Engineering Physics) held a meeting for motivation What kind of assignments were given? We had two missions The first one was to produce the startup neutron source for the nuclear weapon Device made from neutron source materials is called startup neutron source Just like a match can ignite the coals 88-year-old nuclear physicist Hu Renyu tells the story
of joining the testing of China’s first atomic bomb The second mission was to measure the critical mass of Uranium-235 How large a piece can detonate the atomic bomb How far apart can the two pieces stay underneath Ensure the safety of critical mass during processing, storage, and transportation How long did that take? The meeting of motivation was in 1960 and the first time the startup neutron source was used was in 1963 towards the end of the year More than three years Three and a half years So at that time you installed that on the atomic bomb I was the leader of the internal ball group 88-year-old nuclear physicist Hu Renyu tells the story
of joining the testing of China’s first atomic bomb I was in charge of two things The first was the material of the core packaging, transportation and assembly I led a group of people and managed those I was responsible for delivering the startup neutron source After the authentication put the lower hemisphere Uranium-235 in place There would be a small hole in the middle Put the startup neutron source in And put the upper hemisphere on When you were waiting for the detonation you must have been quite nervous On the morning of October 16th, 1964 we started to pull out from the explosion range into the protection area MovieRoaring Across the Horizon (excerpt) We watched the atomic bomb explosion from a hill There was a rule Everyone had to stay on the ground facing towards the ground wearing sunglasses and looking at the ground It wasn’t allowed to look at the explosion center Hu Renyu We had to wait for the detonation So I looked at my watch I hoped three o’clock to come faster Material Five, four, three, two, one Detonate MovieRoaring Across the Horizon (excerpt) After the detonation when we looked up it was already a red fireball There was no flash The fireball was red When you saw the mushroom cloud rise I was so happy I threw my hat in the air and jumped up I fell on the ground when I came down That was how I felt 88-year-old nuclear physicist Hu Renyu tells the story
of joining the testing of China’s first atomic bomb Looking back right now when the first atomic bomb was detonated at that time our country was relatively poor The entire country was in such a tough situation But the successful development of atomic bomb didn’t encounter too many obstacles This was so amazing Looking back right now what do you think is the main reason behind it? That’s why foreigners said we wouldn’t be able to make it in many years They didn’t say that without a reason They analyzed your foundation, your talents and your situation But they didn’t expect the superiority of socialism after China’s liberation It could gather strength from the entire country Everyone worked together towards the same goal It’s even more impossible for them to expect the attitudes of intellectuals and workers during their study of the atomic bomb Up to this day, I still miss when “Two Bombs” was just started I think that was an era when revolutionary passion was burning For everyone who joined the production no one did it for fame or fortune or for his own future They all thought they had to accomplish the mission for their country How would you summarize your life? If you were to evaluate since the liberation I followed the education of our party and took step by step until today If I could use a modern saying it’s called “Never forget your mission” I wouldn’t say I was the best but I tried my best So my thought now is to leave quietly Don’t you feel that you’ve accomplished something so great in your life? I will be totally honest Something so great could never be accomplished by myself I followed the orders of the Party I tried my best to strive I didn’t waste my life At least that’s how I feel In 2019, Hu Renyu was granted the honorary title “The Most Beautiful Fighter”
by the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China and others Luzhou Laojiao National Cellar 1573, Taste the Moment Stories of China, a Taste of China for the World What kind of choice with no regret this is It makes me think of the start of Roaring Across the Horizon There is this question “Are you willing to live your entire life in obscurity?” With so many answers of “yes” so many excellent young people left their loved ones But years later the republic appeared in front of the world in a new stance Yu Min Wang Daheng Wang Xiji Zhu Guangya Sun Jiadong Ren Xinmin Wu Ziliang Chen Fangyun Chen Nengkuan Yang Jiachi Zhou Guangzhao Qian Xuesen Tu Shou’e Huang Weilu Cheng Kaijia Peng Huanwu Wang Ganchang Deng Jiaxian Zhao Jiuzhang Yao Tongbin Qian Ji Qian Sanqiang Guo Yonghuai Those brilliant names gather into gorgeous light and light up

who silently strive and contribute to the cause
of “Two Bombs, One Satellite” of the republic “The vast Kunlun Mountain is roaring across the horizon It sees all the beauty on earth” This is a poem written by Chairman Mao Zedong when he stood on top of the Minshan Mountain in 1935 He used “roaring across the horizon” to describe the grand and majestic Kunlun Mountain But in this world no mountain is taller than humans In 1964 that oriental explosion that shocked the world gathered hundreds of thousands of Chinese people’s persistence and dedication They are like atoms gathering together and exploding with more powerful energy than a nuclear bomb This energy was earthshaking and enabled China to stand in the east of world with a more confident stance Thank you for watching this week’s Stories of China See you the same time next week Let the world have a taste of China This is Stories of China with the exclusive sponsorship by Luzhou Laojiao, National Cellar 1573 This program is broadcast with special arrangement by Bright Dairy & Food with more fresh nutrition Bright Dairy & Food, Bright for the Freshness Lop Nur is where we Chinese people
established confidence and straightened our backbones Science has no national boundaries,
but scientists have their motherlands For the new China to strive sooner,
to see the successful detonation of the atomic bomb sooner,
I won’t regret even if I give up my life dedicate selflessly, live an obscure life Strive in tough conditions,
accomplish earthshaking achievements I chose to return to China
because I want our country
to stand in front of the world Why is dad here?
Dad has business here.
Dad’s business is our nation’s business These children are the youngest startup entrepreneurs
in the history of Malan and our republic They left their loved ones,
but enabled our country to emerge
in front of the world in a new stance With the ambition and pride filled in their chests,
they wrote the most brilliant chapter of life in the “Sea of Death” On October 16th, 1964, 15:00,China’s first atomic bomb was successfully detonated If there’s a next life,
I’ll choose China again,
I’ll choose the cause
of nuclear weapons again,
and I’ll choose you again.
